A word from Bryant…
What is a Futurist?
As with most things, there is a spectrum. At one end there are those who explore possible futures like a tourist explores foreign countries. Science Fiction writers are the landscape painters of these future vistas, sharing their visions with others for entertainment and enlightenment. At the other end of the spectrum are the visionaries: those focused on futures that free humankind from the problems and limitations of the present. Among this group are those sometimes referred to as Agents of Change, who not only envision these futures but dedicate themselves to bringing them about.
We live in a dynamic time, driven by technology, and it seems the future is coming at us fast. Judging by the popular visions of the future as seen in movies and TV, we are clearly nervous about what lies ahead. For every optimistic vision such as Star Trek, there are innumerable dystopian ones. As Buckminster Fuller put it:
“Whether it is to be utopia or oblivion will be a touch-and-go relay race right up to the final moment…”
In this conversation, we will explore some reasons to believe that it is utopia, not oblivion, that waits for us!
About Bryant Cruse
As a futurist, Bryant is in the change agent category, especially in AI and Spaceflight. He has been a pioneer in the application of advanced automation software technology to difficult real-world problems for more than thirty years. His education includes a BA from St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland and an MS in Space Systems Engineering from Johns Hopkins. After he served for eight years as a Naval Aviator, he joined the Mission Operations team for the Hubble Telescope. From there he went on to found two successful high-tech software automation companies, both of which were ultimately acquired by public corporations. New Sapience, founded in 2014, is his third technology company. The patented technology that comprises its “Cognitive Core” represents more than 15 years of development and is the world’s first (and only) technology capable of language comprehension and common-sense reasoning.
